The biological meaning of an adult animal or human is one who has fully developed. Adult is a term employed in relation to human beings in order to define moral and social concepts. Contrary to the term "minor" or "non-adult" an legal adult refers to a person that has reached the age of the age of majority. They are thought to be responsible, independent and capable. The term "major" can be used to define the person. The age when a child turns an adult legally is 18; however, the definition of"legal maturity" is different based on the legal or country system as well as the psychological condition of the child.

At the point that a person reaches physical and intellectual maturity it is referred to as adulthood. The term "adulthood" is generally believed to start around the age of 20 or 21. Middle age starts at around 40 years and is followed by the older age of around 60.
